The Star Citizen single-player Squadron 42 not only officially missed its 2020 beta release but no new date has been announced in its place.

Back in 2018 Cloud Imperium announced that the Star Citizen single-player mode Squadron 42 would be getting a beta release sometime in 2020. However, recent statements from Roberts Space Industries founder and Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts revealed otherwise, which coincides with the RSI project roadmap deleting any mention of the release date on the site back in December 23rd, 2020.

According to Roberts’s statement to donors, “Squadron 42 will be done when it is done, and will not be released just to make a date.” He also said RSI would not show any of Squadron 42‘s “gameplay, locations, or assets” in place of a beta, because the game is too far from a full launch to begin a marketing campaign. “If we show the non-spoiler gameplay now, that’s prime footage and gameplay that could have been used closer to release,” he continued on.

“Because of this I have decided that it is best to not show Squadron 42 gameplay publicly, nor discuss any release date until we are closer to the home stretch and have high confidence in the remaining time needed to finish the game to the quality we want.”

In a press release from Cloud Imperium Games, in an attempt to buy more shares of the studio, three companies including ITG Investors, Snoot Entertainment, and Calder Family Office invested an additional $17.25 million into the game along with the $48 million they put in 2018. Currently, the overall budget of Star Citizen is almost reaching $340 million. It’s worth noting that over $275 million of that has provided by public crowdfunding.

Star Citizen recently released a “Year in Review” trailer, showcasing all the content the game received in 2020. In said new trailer, the devs behind Star Citizen talk about some of the biggest features that the game received in 2020, which you can watch below:
