Despite being the first virtual show in its history, The Game Awards 2020 hit new records with viewership stats from host Geoff Keighley.
With the awards show now in its sixth year, The Game Awards–which is produced annually by Geoff Keighley–has become one of the biggest nights of the year in gaming. Alongside its surprise reveals, announcements, and award wins, The Game Awards have also become a celebration of the culture of gaming, with the show continuing to hit new heights following this year’s show. While this year’s show was the first to be produced virtually in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it also set new TGA viewership records.

Following the ceremony’s airing last week, host and producer Geoff Keighley shared some insight into the viewership for The Game Awards 2020, which reached new milestones in the show’s six-year history. Specifically, this year’s ceremony saw a record 83 million livestreams throughout the night, with a peak of over 8.3 million concurrent viewers during the show. Overall, this marks an increase in viewership of over 80% compared to 2019’s ceremony, which saw 45.2 million livestreams throughout the night last year.

The Game Awards 2020 took place on Thursday, December 10, 2020 and saw The Last of Us Part II taking its top prize for Game of the Year, and winning the most prizes of the night with 7 awards total. Alongside Naughty Dog’s title, some of the other big award wins of the night included Hades for Best Indie Game and Half-Life: Alyx for Best VR/AR Game.
