Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch has been mired by complaints about performance issues, glitches, bugs, and more besides – but one file config edit may help fix a few of the game’s PC concerns.

Cyberpunk player “ThePhoenixRoyal” posted a curious fix on Reddit that shows that even high-end PCs can be dragged down by some questionable standard settings in the game’s config files.

It appears that many PC performance issues may stem from the fact that CD Projekt Red appears to have made it so configuration files allocate the same amount of memory and VRAM on PC as they would if the game were being played on Xbox or PlayStation.

Once the issue is resolved, the Redditor found that the game runs and loads much faster, and can even turn up the various graphics settings much higher than they could before. The comments in the thread also suggest that other players have had similar success after altering the files.

ThePhoenixRoyal outlined how you can jump into these config files and fiddle about with them yourself. Note that diving into config files runs the risk of crashing the game or even Windows, so be sure to proceed at your own risk and understand the danger involved with digging through your files like this.

Hello this is a simple guide created based on u/Thephoneixroyal on reddit to help you get better performance on older Cpus

Step 1 = Locate your game's main folder
On steam right click on the game and click on properties then go to the Local Files tab and click on Broswe Local Files

Step 2 = If you are in the main game's Folder you should to see REDpreLauncher.exe
locate the "Engine" Folder then "Config" and open "memory_pool_budgets.csv" via notepad or wordpad

Step 3 = Adjust Poolcpu's ammount Based on "Your maximum ram - 4 GB" then Adjust the PoolGPU's Ammount based on your Maximum Vram Amount.

CD Projekt Red staff are still bug hunting: last week’s patch fixed an issue where certain images could trigger seizures for people suffering from epilepsy, and CDPR has asked for patience after Cyberpunk 2077’s performance on PS4 and Xbox One kicks off refund campaigns for retailers around the world.
