Call of Duty Warzone ‘isn’t shifting engines’ for Black Ops Cold War

Warzone won’t change game engines when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War becomes part of the free-to-play shooter next month.

Activision announced last week that Treyarch’s game will be integrated into Warzone this December alongside the launch of Black Ops Cold War Season 1.

How deep the integration is in practice remains to be seen, as the game will stick with the Modern Warfare engine it was built on, an Activision representative has said.

“There will not be an engine shift for WZ,” according to Resetera user ShutterMunster, who is verified as an Activision art lead.

Black Ops Cold War will include shared progression with Warzone, adding inventory items that can be used in both games.

Warzone players will also still have access to Modern Warfare content they earned previously, like Operators and weapon blueprints.

Activision said last week that players will be able to choose to use their Black Ops or Modern Warfare loadouts in Warzone.

The publisher also said it plans to reveal more details about Black Ops Cold War’s Warzone integration in the coming weeks.

VGC understands that a large, Cold War-themed Warzone map revamp is scheduled to happen in 2021.

Black Ops Cold War is set for release on PC, current and next-gen consoles on November 13.
