PlayStation Plans to Support PS4 for Another 3 or 4 Years

The PS4 is here to stay and PlayStation head Jim Ryan says that Sony won't be looking to end support for the console in lieu of the PS5 for a few more years.

Even though PlayStation is gearing up to finally release the PS5 this November, the company seems to have no intention to abandon the PS4 any time soon.

In a new conversation with The Washington Post, PlayStation head Jim Ryan made clear that despite the PS5 releasing in a little under two months, Sony still intends to support the PS4 for quite a long period of time. When asked about whether or not PlayStation fans should be frustrated that the company is bringing titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon: Forbidden West to PS4 in addition to PS5 (despite previously indicating otherwise), Ryan explained that no player should be upset.

“No one should be disappointed,” Ryan said plainly. “The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It’s about people having choice. I’m really quite pleased about the situation.”

As for how much longer the PS4 itself will be supported, Ryan said the company’s current-gen product will be “incredibly important” for another three or four years. “Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4,” he said.

While these newfound talking points from Ryan somewhat fly in the face of what he has previously said, from a business perspective, you really can’t blame Sony for making this decision. The PS4 currently has an install base worldwide of above 110 million. To just abandon those users so quickly after launching the PS5 wouldn’t make much sense at all.

That being said, it will be curious to see what “support” for the PS4 will continue to look like as we get to 2021 and beyond. Will other first-party titles, such as the forthcoming new God of War, come to PS4 as well as PS5, or will Sony eventually start to draw the line somewhere? These questions will surely have to be answered at some point.

Fortunately, even if you are an early adopter of the PS5, nearly the entirety of your PS4 library should be making the transition with you.

Maze Probably a good choice seeing how many consoles were sold, not everyone will shoot over to the next gen right away

Agreed very smart move on PlayStation accord
