Phil Spencer says Xbox Game Pass won’t come to competing consoles

Despite various reports and rumors, Microsoft isn’t bringing its Xbox Game Pass service to other consoles.

Speaking in an interview with Game Star, Xbox boss Phil Specner said not not to expect Xbox Game Pass to arrive on consoles other than a Microsoft brand.

According to Spencer, it’s because competitive platforms aren’t “really interested” in having the “full Xbox experience on their hardware.”

“The thing about other gaming console platforms is we’re not able to bring a full Xbox experience on those platforms,” said Spencer (thanks, TweakTown).

“In places where we have, like mobile phones like we’re doing now with xCloud coming to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate…what we’ve done with PC in bringing our full Xbox experience there. Because we know when somebody is playing one of our Xbox games there is an expectation that “I’ve got my Xbox LIVE community, I have my achievements, Game Pass is an option for me, my first-party library is completely there”.

“The other competitive platforms aren’t really that interested in having a full Xbox experience on their hardware. But for us, we want to be where gamers want to be and that’s the path that we’re on.”

Previous reports, like one from February of last year, stated Microsoft was working on making its Xbox Game Pass subscription service available on Nintendo Switch. The report stated the company would bring the service to the console using its xCloud game streaming tech through a dedicated Xbox App.

It appears that will not come to pass though, going by Spencer’s comments.

Game Pass is a brilliant way to test out games and see wether you like them or not i've always been a fan of it, I love trying out new and different games than i usually play and Game Pass gives me that option. Idk why they are bringing it to competing consoles? Silly if you ask me.

Not gonna lie, if Game Pass went to other consoles, I'd probably go to PlayStation. I would be able to get Halo and Spider-Man on one console. It'd be fantastic. I'm curious as to what exactly the issue is. My guess is something to do with who gets the money if someone on PS or Switch buys a game through Game Pass a non-Xbox platform. Like, who gets a cut? (Assuming they'd even all you to buy Halo through the Game Pass on PlayStation.) Overall, I only see it benefiting the other consoles if they decide to do it. They will get more people onto their console and in turn more people will buy their exclusives and subscriptions as well.
