Total videogame spend in US hits $4.5 billion during Q2

NPD has released a report citing the amount spent by US consumers on gaming accessories, content and hardware during Q2 of the 2011 fiscal year, and the figure currently stands at $4.5 billion, which is up one percent year-over-year. Titled Q2 2011 Games Industry: Total Consumer Spend, NPD reports that $1.44 billion was spent on new physical game titles for PC and console, and $1.74 billion was spent on used and rental games, along with full-game downloads, subscriptions, social, DLC and mobile titles.

“While the new physical retail channel still generates the majority of industry sales, our expanded research coverage allows us to assess the total consumer spend across the growing number of ways to acquire and experience gaming, including mobile apps and downloadable content,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Yesterday, NPD released a report stating that digital spending had increased by 17 percent in the age group 2-14, and that over the last two years, children as young as 7-years old were purchasing digital content with their own money.
