Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is Set One Year After the Original

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has received new details on gameplay, story, and the decision to focus on Miles himself.

Outside of the reveal trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales that debuted last week, not many other details on the project have yet been disclosed by Sony or developer Insomniac Games just yet. However, that veil has now been pulled back just a bit more as of today.

Seen over at the PlayStation Blog, Brian Horton, who is the creative director of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, set the stage for the game a bit more today and let fans know what they can look forward to. Perhaps most notably, Horton said that Miles Morales takes place over one year after the events of the original game, which explains how Miles himself is now more proficient with his superpowers.

“Marvel’s New York is covered in snow, and just before Christmas break, a war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out. Miles’s new home in Harlem is at the heart of the battle,” Horton said of the story. “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an important, heartfelt, emotional and essential experience to expanding the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. And we hope it will be for you as well. ”

In an accompanying video, Horton and Insomniac’s senior animator James Ham explained some of the new aspects of this game along with why they decided to go in this direction. Horton talked about some of the new powers that Miles has at his disposal, which includes invisibility and his venom strike. Ham went on to say that he believes representation also matters greatly, and given Miles’ prominence in recent years, this just felt like the right direction for the studio to go in.

Of all the information that Horton laid out, the location of Harlem is specifically interesting to me because it is a well-known region of New York City where another popular Marvel character resides. Luke Cage, who is the leader of the superhero group Heroes for Hire, notably lives in Harlem. While it’s not confirmed whatsoever that Cage might end up appearing in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it stands to reason that he could show up at some point. And even if Cage himself doesn’t pop up, there will almost surely be some sort of location alluding to his presence, much like what Insomniac did in the original game with groups like the Avengers and characters like Dr. Strange.

This will be pretty cool then, hopefully we get to see signs/clues of the game only being 1 year later.
