PS5 Event Planned for Thursday Has Been Postponed

3.9
Sony has said it is moving its upcoming PS5 event to a new date to in the interim "allow more important voices to be heard."

Perhaps unsurprising given everything that has transpired in the United States and around the world over the past week, Sony Interactive Entertainment officially announced today that it is postponing its planned PS5 event that was set to take place this week on June 4.

Sony made the announcement on Twitter today in a brief statement that pointed to everything that has transpired recently as the reason why it is rescheduling this PS5 stream. “While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard,” the message from PlayStation read. For now, no new date as to when this PS5 event will be held has been given, but you would imagine it won’t be a lengthy delay.

The decision comes after a week in the United States that has been filled with widespread protests across the nation. In light of the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, cities around the country have seen its citizens pouring into the streets to protest the justice system and speak out against systemic racism in the U.S. that has long gone unchecked.

In some respects, it’s surprising to see Sony make this move, but it’s also undoubtedly the right one. While a medium that we all love, video games are a form of entertainment at the end of the day. For Sony to try and jump in at the moment and talk about its new high-tech entertainment box just seems off in some respects, especially when far more important discussions are being had right now. Other video game publishers, such as Electronic Arts, also recently delayed its new trailer revealing this year’s edition of Madden 21 in light of protests, too.

This PS5 event will still happen and we’ll see what games are set to come to the platform in time, but we’re also more than capable of waiting. Whenever Sony announces a new date, we’ll let you know.

xXTTGReaperXx I call bullshit. They've been putting off this launch for so long and finally felt the pressure to present it but got lucky to post pone it again. Something is going on and I feel like they really underestimated their competition this time.

I doubt it was anything to do with problems on their end, just the state of the world at the current time.

Was super sad to see this got cancelled, the digital event was well worth the wait though.

Still a good event & with what's happening you can see why it was postponed.

Understand why the delayed it, no one is in a rush anyway and what they announced the other day is good enough!

I completely understand why they delayed it. At least they have time to perfect whatever they were gonna present.
