Minecraft - Pocket Edition Coming to Android This Week

4.7
Mojang, in their usual roundabout way, has announced that Minecraft is coming to Android handsets this Thursday, September 29. Mojang developer Daniel Kaplan tweeted the news earlier today. The indie developer is also showing off how Mincraft Pocket Edition's Android touch controls are shaping up. Mojang has added a virtual D-pad to the left side of the screen for handling movement, and dragging anywhere on the right side of the screen controls your camera view. One nice touch is that your character will auto-jump when walking into a ledge, eliminating the need to mash the jump button over and over to climb hills. To place blocks users simply tap the screen. To mine blocks players hold the screen.

Like the previous Xperia Play-exclusive edition of Minecraft, this Android release is essentially a tweaked Creative Mode. Players can spawn new worlds and build/delete blocks, but there are no enemies, and no health or hunger bars to keep an eye on.

The long-rumored iOS port of Minecraft was also announced, via Mojang's video description: "iOS coming eventually!"
