PS5’s reveal event ‘is currently set’ for June

3.8
A prominent journalist has claimed Sony is planning to unveil its PlayStation 5 plans on Thursday, June 4.

That’s according to VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, who shared what he called the ‘current’ reveal event date on the Resetera forum.

Sources had previously told VGC that Sony was planning to hold its significant PlayStation 5 reveal event in May, but that those dates could potentially slip a few weeks into June.

Sony has had to constantly readjust its plans for the year due to disruption caused by the coronavirus, including shifting the release dates of major PS4 exclusives. However, the platform holder has recently reiterated its intention to launch PS5 at the end of the year.

The cancellation of this year’s E3 show is understood to have caused games publishers to spread their marketing plans more broadly across the 2020 calendar.

Microsoft is expected to make its next significant Xbox Series X announcements in May, VGC was told, while we understand that many major third-party publishers have moved their key reveals away from E3’s traditional early June dates.

It’s been suggested that Microsoft could announce a cheaper next-gen console, titled Xbox Series S, during a hardware reveal event early next month.

If Grubb’s claims are correct, it’s likely that PlayStation would be the only platform holder to make announcements around E3’s original dates, despite being the only one of the console companies which wasn’t planning to attend E3 2020.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer previously said the platform holder would continue to be “bold” and “different” with its Series X reveals up until the console’s launch.

Spencer took the unconventional decision to reveal the next-gen Xbox console at The Game Awards in December, instead of a bespoke media event or trade show.

Since then Microsoft has delivered regular news and media on its Xbox Series X plans, as it attempts to wrestle back market share from PlayStation.

In comparison, Sony has adopted a cautious approach for its PS5 marketing plans in the first half of 2020, partially to avoid distracting from key PS4 exclusives Final Fantasy 7 Remake, The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.
