DICE is Gearing Up for Next Battlefield Game

4.4
It sounds as if the next entry in the popular Battlefield franchise will be launching next year. Publisher EA strongly implied earlier this week that Battlefield 6 will be arriving in 2021, as developer DICE begins to wrap up work on Star Wars Battlefront II and Battlefield V.

Just last week, DICE confirmed that it was working on the final content drop for 2018's Battlefield V. Not long after that, we learned that the incoming Battle on Scarif update for Star Wars Battlefront II would "complete" the studio's vision for the 2017 sci-fi shooter. Naturally, one would assume this means DICE is gearing up to move its teams onto a new project.

Sure enough, that seems to be the case. We'd previously heard from EA CFO Blake Jorgensen that the FPS would release during EA's fiscal 2022, which meant it could arrive anywhere between April 2021 through to March 2022. But in a statement given to VGC on Tuesday, EA appears to have narrowed down the release window for Battlefield 6 considerably.

"The team at DICE is working on the standalone Battlefield V update releasing this summer, and continuing their work on delivering Community Games," an EA spokesperson said.

"While the studio's vision for Star Wars Battlefront II is now complete with this week's The Battle on Scarif Update, the servers, in-game challenges, recurring events and game support will continue as the game lives on with players and the community. We're looking forward to hearing players' stories for both games, for years to come.

"Longer term, the studio is focused on the future of Battlefield that we'll be bringing to players in 2021."

It's important to note that while "the future of Battlefield" is very likely a reference to Battlefield 6, we don't know for sure it'll be called as such. It could be another spinoff entry similar to Bad Company, or something completely unexpected. Whatever the case, it seems clear that brand-new Battlefield action is on the horizon.

Given the 2021 release window, we can probably also assume that the new Battlefield will be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, which are still on track to release by the end of this year. As for whether the game will be next-gen only, or will still be available on PS4 and Xbox One? We'll have to wait and see.

I guess for now we speculate and dream about what time period the next game will take place in. The last two games in the series tackled WWI and WWII respectively, but given the huge success of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, I'd bet DICE will be taking the franchise back to a more contemporary setting.

OGTrey079 If they **** up the game their reputation is going right down the drain. Battlefield V was really lacking at launch. This time they have an extra year since they said they want to develop it utilizing next gen console's hardware.

The last two battlefield games have been terrible to me. Really hoping they bounce back as much as I don't like the series anymore.

Yeah they really need to revive the series or it will just end up straight in the bin.

Don't get me wrong they have had good games. Bad company was great along with BF4 but it has really gone downhill.

Man I love Battlefield. But the last two games have been boring for me. Don't get me wrong I still bought and played both games but definitely didn't put as much hours into it as I did BF3. Hoping they make the next game more modern and get out of this WW1 and WW2 theme cause it's just depressing.

Not really much interest in BF. I tried playing a few of them and they're just really boring to me and slow paced. Good news for BF fans though I know there are a lot out there.

I miss BF3 and all the good times I had but can't really see me getting back into Battlefield unless they came up with something innovative etc.
