What’s a PS4 Devkit?

Console devkits are typically sent to trusted development studios ahead of the release of a console, to help with the development of games for the platform, but also to gather feedback from developers during development phase. Devkits might have in particular more ram than the retail product, and often have different restrictions on how they can run software.

Individual developers, let alone homebrew developers, typically don’t have access to these machines, but once in a while, those surface on the secondary market via eBay or other online marketplaces.

Tinkerers and hackers leverage the differences of permissions on devkits to gather more understanding of the retail systems. For example, devkits could allow developers to run code that is signed under slightly different conditions that on the retail system. The hardware as well might be different and help understand some of the internals of the retail version.
