PS4 Has Surpassed 108 Million Units Sold

4.1
Through the end of 2019, the PS4 has now nearly reached 109 million units shipped around the globe.

Sony today revealed its latest earnings report for the third quarter of fiscal year 2019 and in the process unveiled the latest sales totals for the PlayStation 4.

As of the end of December 2019, which is when Sony’s third quarter wrapped up, the PS4 has now shipped 108.9 million consoles around the world. In this quarter alone, 6.1 million units of the platform were sold. As always, keep in mind that these totals are reflective of the console’s sell-in rate, which is the number that has been shipped to retailers. The sell-through total, which is the number of consoles that consumers have directly purchased, will be a bit lower and is unknown.

All in all, it was another strong holiday quarter for Sony, although these figures are much lower than last year at the same time. Comparatively, Sony’s total game revenue in the third quarter was down 20% year-over-year. This might seem like a cause for concern, but it’s actually not that unusual. Sony stated that because of the reveal of the PS5, console sales for the PS4 dipped on the quarter, which is something that has been true for the company throughout the entire fiscal year. As the PS4 generation begins to wind down, console sales always start to slow as well which means total revenue will also dip.

On the more positive end of things, however, Sony also reported that PS Plus subscribers have reached an all-time high. As of the end of December, 38.8 million users are subscribed to the PlayStation service, which means Sony is seeing quite a bit of reoccurring revenue. Furthermore, the company also recently announced that software sales for the PS4 have now surpassed one billion in total. Even if things have slowed down a bit for Sony in recent months, the company still continues to see massive wins in other areas.

For the fourth quarter of this current fiscal year, Sony only expects a mere 1.4 million PS4 units to be shipped around the world. We’ll have to wait until later this spring to see if that ends up being an accurate estimation.

With the PS5 set to release later this year, it will be interesting to see how the PS4 continues to do in its final months as Sony’s only console on the market. In the meantime, perhaps Sony will finally begin to reveal more about the PS5 in the near future. There’s still a lot we have left to learn about the next-gen PlayStation platform but one thing is for sure: Sony is surely hoping that the PS5 can replicate the same success that the PS4 has had.
