It appears as if Valve’s announcement of the VR-exclusive title Half-Life: Alyx has more than doubled the sales of the Valve Index VR headset according to statistics from SuperData.
As reported by Eurogamer, SuperData states that the Valve Index had sold 46,000 units prior to Q4. However, once Valve announced Half-Life: Alyx, the sales shot up to 149,000 units sold in 2019. That’s 103,000 units that were sold in October and through to December. The Valve Index has also sold more units than any other PC VR headset available during the quarter.
SuperData also states that the Index would have sold even more had it not been for Valve running out of stock. The headset is still out of stock with customers having no choice but to choose to be notified when they’re back in stock.
Of course, those who managed to grab the Valve Index would have had a choice to get the headset on its own, or with a Base Station 2.0. For the headset alone, it’d cost $499 and features dual LCD displays and adjustable headphones and the controllers costing and extra $279. To get the headset, controllers, and the Base Station 2.0, it comes to $999. Those who ordered the headset also get Half-Life: Alyx for free which is only available on PC and exclusive to VR players.
SuperData also shows a graph of the top VR headsets based on sales for Q4 2019. The PlayStation VR headset sits at the top of the graph with 338k sales, and the Oculus Quest sitting directly beneath at 317k sales. The Valve Index is the best-selling PC VR headset as it comes in third place with 103k sales with the Oculus Go at 84k and the Oculus Rift S at 71k.
Half-Life: Alyx is to launch in March, and we expect to see Valve getting some more Valve Index headsets back in stock as we draw nearer to the launch date.
