DOOM Eternal Will Have No Microtransactions Creative Director Confirms

DOOM Eternal will not have any transactions whatsoever, and cosmetics will be unlockable only by earning experience points. At least that’s what creative director, Hugo Martin has confirmed through a Facebook comment.

In a Facebook comment that has been screen-capped and shared online, Hugo Martin has confirmed that the upcoming DOOM Eternal will contain cosmetics, but players will have to unlock them by earning XP. Martin explains to a Facebook user that the game will not have a store and that these cosmetics “just look cool” and will not impact the game’s performance.

He goes on to explain, “Eternal is a $60 game, not a free-to-play game or a mobile game – we are giving you a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect.” So if you want to have a fancy-looking weapon, you’ve got to earn it. And like Martin suggests, “Unlocking skins with XP is a part of the experience if you care about that stuff, or you can completely ignore it”.

This feels weird to report on because it was only this morning I was waking up, thinking it’d be nice to go back to a time where everything obtainable within a game is 100% free and unlocked through achievements or progressing. Over the years, microtransactions and loot boxes have been increasingly opposed by not only players but the government and now mental health professionals.

DOOM Eternal is going to be launching on Animal Crossing: New Horizons day, which is March 20, 2020.
