The new Nioh 2 trailer gives fans a better glimpse into the story, characters, and world.

Today, Sony released the latest trailer of Team Ninja’s upcoming Nioh 2. In 2017’s Nioh, you played as the Totally-Not-Geralt-of-Rivia, William, a Caucasian white-haired dude that stood out a bit in the feudal Japan setting. He was also a character with very few options when it came to customizing.

In Nioh 2, will have much more flexibility, playing as a mute character that is hired to help in hunting down evil yokai. Players will be able to create and customize their own unique character, making each yokai hunter you play online much more unique. Born of both a human and yokai parents, you will be able to tap into the power of your demonic blood to transform yourself into a stronger yokai form. This newfound power will grant you all manner of enhancements and bonuses.

This latest trailer for Nioh 2 is focused around the story you can expect to embark on when the game releases in March.

In this new trailer, we see scenes of a burning city, mysterious figures, and individuals that have partnered with yokai. Objects known as “spirit stones” seem to have some importance to the story of the game, being mentioned numerous times.

The previous game took aspects of the popular Souls formula, mixed with the loot mechanics of Diablo-like titles, and also included a deep combat system that forced players to switch through various fighting stances forms while playing to the various weapon types strengths.

Recently, director and producer of the game, Fumihiko Yasuda, shared that development on Nioh 2 was almost complete along with a bunch of new screenshots. If you prefer to go in blind with the story but are interested to see how the game plays, you can check out our previous coverage of gameplay of the Battle of Anegawa Stage along with a boss fight.

Nioh 2 was first announced back at E3 2018. Fans of the series have been able to try out the game with a closed alpha that came out in May 2019 and then a beta in November. With the game’s release drawing close, Yasuda said to expect new information coming out every week, leading up to release.

Nioh 2 is one of my most anticipated titles of the year and aims to fill in a number of the gaps that I found lacking from last year’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The numerous weapon types, a bigger focus on equipment and loot, and being able to play in co-op with a friend have me excited. With so many titles recently skipping out on their initial release dates, I’ll have more time now to invest back into Feudal Japan and the struggles of my new mute hero.

The co-op play should be exciting. It sucks to see a lot of games are straying away from that lately.
