Infinity Ward announced the upcoming addition in a community update blog post this week. The post also notes that Modern Warfare will also see the return of Gunfight Tournaments, which were a hit in November, as well as the addition of more loadout slots beyond the current five. The new loadout slots will arrive in “the coming weeks,” Infinity Ward says, but it has not provided a timeframe for the 3v3 Gunfight playlist or the return of Gunfight Tournament – so we’ll have to keep an eye on the Modern Warfare Trello board for hints at when they’ll show up.
Gunfight, if you haven’t been keeping track of your Call of Duty news lately, is a tense, fast-paced mode that by default features two teams of two players each facing off across a small, contained map. Players all get the same random equipment, and the last team with a player standing wins – no respawns until the next round begins. If neither team has been eliminated after 40 seconds, a flag spawns at the centre of the map, and whoever can capture that wins the round. The first team to win six rounds is the winner of the match.
Jordan called it his “dream game mode” back when he tried it pre-release, and it’s proven to be a hit with the playerbase as well. When it returns, Gunfight Tournament will once again offer special rewards to winning teams.
As for the new loadout slots, we’d heard these were coming earlier this month when Modern Warfare art director Joel Emslie mentioned on Reddit that the studio was working through the surprising number of bugs that popped up while adding the new slots.
Infinity Ward has been adding content to Modern Warfare at a rapid clip, with new modes, maps, and limited time events all showing up since its launch in late October. And no wonder: it’s the most-played Call of Duty title since Black Ops 2.
