Pokemon Sword & Shield Has Highest Selling Launch in Franchise History

Pokemon Sword and Shield, according to the latest NPD data, beat out Sun and Moon for highest launch month dollar sales in franchise history.

Some brand new sales numbers made their debut thanks to The NPD Group, and so far Pokemon Sword and Shield is continuing to break its franchise global sales records. According to the Twitter thread from Mat Piscatella, a video game industry analyst at The NPD Group, the latest installment in the long running series has the highest launch month dollar sales in Pokemon franchise history:

This of course means that it beat out the previous record holder for best launch month dollar sales: Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Other notable stats include that for the month of November Pokemon Sword was the third best selling game, the double pack including both titles ranking at fourth place, and Pokemon Shield being in fifth place. However, if you combined those sales then total it would bring them to the number two spot.

In other recent news, Pokemon Sword and Shield are already the eighth best-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time at six million units sold during its launch weekend alone. Check out pictures of the game’s launch event held at Nintendo NYC. And in not so cheery recent news, Pokemon Company International is looking to sue leakers who spread around pictures of their then unreleased official strategy guide.

The Pokemon Company announced a new animated series called Pokemon: Twilight Wings, which will debut on YouTube next month. The seven-part animated web series will be coming in January 2020 with each episode approximately five minutes long. Not to mention the studio that’s developing and animating is Studio Colorido, which was previously known for producing the animated film Penguin Highway, and is being directed by Shingo Yamashita.

Zema Not surprised at all happy to see it do this good

Why? This just shows Gamefreak that they can do less and earn more. Pokemon Ranger has more post game content than Sword/Shield, and it wasn't made by GameFreak and was a spinoff game.

You're absolutely right this is a great game

I can't tell if you misunderstood my intent or are being spiteful but I was questioning you being happy for a game that was rushed, half baked, and is missing a lot of content. Why would anyone be happy at a very crappy iteration of pokemon? Like I said, GF sees the sales and goes "Oh so they like it when we strip the substance of a game? Great we will continue to do that by cutting out starters completely next time!" or something like that. It just proves that most of the the player base is either mindless or gullible, or even both
