Beat Saber Developer Beat Games Acquired by Facebook

Facebook has acquired Beat Saber developer Beat Games and a 360° Levels mode is coming to the game next month.

Beat Saber may be one of the best and most popular VR games ever, and its developer has just been acquired. Facebook, who are the owners of Oculus, confirmed today that they have acquired Beat Saber’s Czech developer Beat Games.

“The shared experiences of games are profoundly memorable ones, and for millions of people, Beat Saber was their first encounter with immersive VR gaming. Today we’re announcing that Beat Games is joining us in our quest to bring VR to more people around the world,” Oculus’ official announcement begins. “They will join Oculus Studios as an independently operated studio in Prague, continuing to create new ways for people to experience music and VR gaming. Most importantly, what the community has come to love about Beat Saber will remain intact.”

As Oculus tends to be more exclusive focused than its competitors and Beat Saber is available on other platforms like PlayStation VR, some may be worried about support for other versions of the game ceasing. Fortunately, Facebook says that this will not be the case. “Beat Games will continue to ship content and updates for Beat Saber across all currently supported platforms, now with even more support from Facebook.” Those updates will apparently include “social features, new modes, music, and more.”

The one thing Facebook does seem a bit shakey on regarding Beat Saber is the modding scene. In the same announcement post, they do voice support for it but want to ensure mods stay legal and follow Oculus’ policies. “We’re going to do our best to preserve the value that mods bring to the Beat Saber player base. As a reminder, our most recent policy updates give more clarity to how developer mode is intended to be used, such as helping developers build their apps or for enthusiasts to explore new concepts. It is not intended for engaging in piracy or illicit modding, including mods that infringe on third-party IP rights or contain malicious code.”

For now, not much seems to be changing about the content rollout for Beat Saber. Oculus Rift confirmed that more music and a 360° Levels mode are coming in December and that “this is just the beginning” when it comes to Facebook and Oculus commitment to VR and intent to purchase more studios.
