Developer Explains Why PS5 Won't Be Revolutionary

3.7
Sony has slowly but surely been revealing small tidbits about the PS5, but we still don't really know what the next-gen PlayStation console is capable of. In the past, developers and others have suggested it could be a big leap for console gaming. That said, according to one developer, there won't be anything revolutionary about the PS5, rather the system will be more of an evolution of console gaming. In other words, console gaming will improve considerably, but not drastically.

According to Danny Weinbaum, the director of Eastshade, next-gen hardware will be more iterative than game-changing. As you may know, many have been talking up the PS5's SSD, but beyond load times and open-world games, console gaming won't be as impacted by this as gamers think, or at least that's what Weinbaum claims.

“Many games have everything they need in memory already, so it wouldn’t affect much there, but it will be helpful for open world titles which require streaming,” said the developer while speaking with GamingBolt. “I’d say it won’t really affect performance much. Mostly it will reduce load times.”

Weinbaum continued, talking about the PS5's Zen 2 CPU that many have also been raving about:

"It won’t change much really,” said Weinbaum. “It will allow more draw calls I suppose, for example more objects on screen. It will be an evolution, not a revolution.”

Of course, it remains to be seen just how different the PS5 will be from the PS4. However, if the jump from PS3 to PS4 is any indicator, then, well, things won't be that dramatically different. It will be another decent step towards realism, but it sounds like it may not be as revolutionary as some previous console generational leaps have been.

PlayStation 5 is set to release sometime holiday 2020.

I'll still be getting both next gen consoles.

I've always said it's too early to release a new gen console and this makes me believe so even more. Just continue updating and tweaking the PS4.

I don't understand developers like that if games have everything they need whats the point in getting better hardware and moving forward if hes to lazy or does not feel like utilising and learnimg to develope games on better hardware then i won't play his games, to me next gen will be revolutionary, games will load faster, be 4k some smaller even 8k, have ray tracing, better physics and dynamics, the option for performance mode 120fps or to have better detail and im sure with all the extra power and more people getting bigger storage devices we will probbaly get more and better animations, etc. If developers have everything they need rn even tho games frame rates can barley hold 60fps lol im sure they will figure out and utilise the extra power and speed in some way to enchance games.

I never got a ps4 pro or xbox one x as i knew it was a mid gen upgrade and i just want to witness the full next gen i still have the og xbox one that lags on indie titles crashes on AAA games and has had performance issues for years so next gen will be a leap for me and my friends there can't be a revolution without a evolution, to some on mid gen and pc it might not be revolutionary but i reckon to alot of people on the base consoles and even last gen it will be.

And the new cpus not being game changing i also have to dissagree with its the bottleneck in todays consoles better cpu better frame rates.

But if hes right and next gen isnt really a big deal and wont change much then man devs these can't optimise games for shit so many games have came out this year that just run poorly on current hardware not sure if its the same on mid gen, i think for sure games will be smoother next gen.

When the ps5 is out i want to see games compaired side by side on the ps4 from 2013 and the ps5 from 2020 to see how the grapics the load times and the frames hold up.

so pretty much sums up the xbox 362/720/scarlett or whatever their gonna call it as they arent good with names, so this dev just said that both consoles arent revolutionary since they both share the same hardware.

but yeah everyone should known this considering its a console so its nothing really new

This is why I most likely wont get a new gen and build a good pc that will last longer and will be better and not having to worry about back compatibility.
