Epic Games Acquires Quixel, Will Make Megascans Free to Unreal Engine

Epic Games has now acquired Quixel and will be allowing Unreal Engine developers to access a library of over 10,000 Megascans for free.

Epic Games has officially acquired Quixel, a company founded back in 2011 with the aim to speed up the process of building digital environments by offering creators 3D building blocks for their projects. The main draw of this acquisition is that Epic Games will be bringing Quixel’s library of over 10,000 2D and 3D photogrammetry assets for free to Unreal Engine developers.

Quixel has over 100 employees across 6 different countries and their assets are used by companies such as Bungie, Naughty Dog, EA DICE, SEGA, and more. Despite the employees now joining Epic Games, the primary operations center will remain in Sweden as reported by Gamesindustry.biz.

Quixel Megascans is a library featuring a large collection of high-quality scans that can be applied to Unreal Engine projects. The scans can range from vegetation, imperfections, tileable surfaces, and many more.

Earlier this year, Quixel showed exactly what the Unreal Engine is capable of using Megascans. You can find the short film below.

Epic Games will also be bringing Quixel’s Bridge and Mixer toolsets to Unreal Engine developers for free on the same day Megascans goes free. At current, there has not been an official date for when these products will go free.

Bridge allows developers to easily manage the assets and send them to any renderers, engines, or DCC (Digital Content Creation). Mixer allows for customization of materials, mixing textures and painting.

Tim Sweeney, CEO at Epic Games spoke about the acquisition “By coming together with Quixel to make Megascans free for all use in Unreal Engine, this level of artistry is now available to everyone from triple-A studios to indies.”

Back in March 2018, Epic Games released Paragon assets worth over $12 million for free to Unreal Engine developers. The company also released the Epic Games Store with 88% of revenue going to developers. These and this acquisition along with making the assets free is just another way the company seems to be helping improve the quality of the game development scene.

This is great! I still can't believe people hate Epic like its an "ea clone" lol
They do so much for devs and the community. I had trouble with ARK devkit and they helped a fair amount of what they known and could do.
