With over 15 first-party studios, PlayStation will be opening a new development studio in Malaysia.

In a new report from Gamesindustry.biz, PlayStation will be opening a new development studio in Malaysia.

“With this establishment, Malaysia will be working closely with Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide to create more opportunities for the local and regional games industry, ” says YB Gobind Singh Deo, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia. “Together, we will work to uplift creative talents in Malaysia and even establish a partnership with our local educational partners. This is to ensure that accelerated growth of the industry in our country will be supported.”

This will be Sony’s first development studio in Southeast Asia and they’ll provide art and animation as PlayStation continues creating exclusive titles. They’ll join exclusive studios such as Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Guerilla Games, Media Molecule, and the recently acquired Insomniac Games.

“Malaysia has all the right criteria to become the favored investment location for international game developers,” says YB Datuk Darrel Leiking, the Minister of International Trade and Industry Malaysia. “Our thriving games ecosystem and world-class talent have attracted over 60 game development studios from all over the world and we look forward to more in the future.”

PlayStation’s Jim Ryan also added that “Impressive talent, a vibrant game ecosystem, and support from the government are key reasons why we have decided to take our partnership with Malaysia to the next level.”

News of a new first-party studio in Malaysia comes a few days after it was announced that Guerilla Games’ Herman Hulst will be the new head of WorldWide Studios. As for Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of Worldwide Studios, he’ll lead a new indie game initiative. Additionally, Jim Ryan has spoken about how major first-party titles may not come to PlayStation Now anytime soon. He’s also said that developers and publishers are having an easier time coding on the PlayStation 5 than any other PlayStation console.
