Naughty Dog has confirmed that The Last of Us Part II's new release date will be May 29, 2020.

After a report emerged this morning that claimed The Last of Us Part II would soon be delayed by Sony, Naughty Dog has now confirmed the news themselves and has announced a new release date for the title.

The Last of Us Part II will now be releasing on PS4 on May 29, 2020. Director Neil Druckmann was the one to relay the information regarding the game’s delay, apologizing to fans in the process. “We hate disappointing our fans and for that we’re sorry,” Druckmann stated in a new blog post.

The reason for the delay according to Druckmann is due to the amount of polish that The Last of Us Part II requires. “However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time,” Druckmann wrote. “We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.”

Of course, delays like this are never fun, especially for a high-anticipated title like The Last of Us Part II. That said, Naughty Dog’s track record speaks for itself and if the team felt like it needed more time, well, that’s almost surely the right call. What we’ve seen of the game so far looks fantastic and with a little more polish, that experience will surely continue to be even better once it drops in late May.
