PS5 Tech Demos Include Gran Turismo Sport Port

The haptics motors of the PS5 controller allows for some pretty realistic sensations regarding which surface you're driving on.

Sony officially revealed PS5 is coming in holidays 2020 and revealed much more on the next-gen console. While ordinary people like us still have no idea what PS5 even looks like, Sony has already been sending dev kits and prototype controllers to certain developers.

Wired, who broke the news on PS5, most notably mentioned the PS5 dev kits include a PS5 port of Gran Turismo Sport, currently available on PS4. The port most notably lets developers test the new haptics motors of the PS5 controller, replacing the traditional rumble motors. Basically, to take some concrete examples, the haptics motors of the PS5 controller lets you actually tell what kind of surface you’re driving on. And driving on two different surfaces at the same time, like the road track and the dirt, is properly transmitted as well.

The PS5 dev kits also include short demos, most notably platformers, developed by Japan Studio, the team behind Astro Bot Rescue Mission VR. All the surfaces’ sensations in the demos are realistically transmitted to the players’ hands thanks to haptics motors.

Sony also told Wired they’ve actually been working on haptics feedback for quite a long while now, since the DualShock 4 was in development, so it’s not something coming out of the blue.

A Gran Turismo game being used as a tech demo is pretty symbolic in my opinion. I remember the days in 1998 when all the kids in the neighborhood considered the first Gran Turismo on PS1 to be the most realistic and best-looking game there will ever be.

PS5 is coming in late 2020 and will allow stuff like letting you choose which parts of a game to install.
