PS4’s cross-play feature has seemingly graduated out of beta.

For a while, Sony was ardently blocking cross-play support for the vast majority of games on PS4. It took a mammoth like Fortnite to convince the platform holder to change its mind.

Over a year ago now, Sony enabled cross-play in Fortnite, allowing all players – including those on PS4 – to play with and against each other. Sony said at the time that this is the start of a “beta” for cross-play, with more games to be added down the line.

Though the number of games that support cross-play on PS4 have certainly increased, more recently with PUBG, other developers report inconsistent responses from Sony when asking the company to enable the feature for their games.



It now appears that all of this is behind us, as Wired now reports that cross-play is now available to any developer who would use it, having exited beta. The site suggests that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – which supports cross-play at launch – could be the first game to release under the new policy.

“The track record of the incumbent platform winning the next time around is not a great one,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, told the site. “So the major thrust of my executive energy is to avoid complacency.”
