Counter-Strike: Global Offensive match fixing leads to six arrests

Police in Australia arrested six men accused of fixing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive esports matches.

According to the police report, six men between the ages of 19-22 were arrested for fixing at least five Counter Strike matches.

The arrests were made after a five month investigation, initiated after a betting agency claimed suspicious activity around the matches.

Warrants to search the premises of the accused were issued and led to the arrests. The suspects were accused of placing bets on their own matches and throwing them, affecting 20 bets in the process.

“Esports is really an emerging sporting industry and with that will come the demand for betting availability on the outcomes of tournaments and matches,” said assistant commissioner Neil Paterson, via GI.biz. “These warrants also highlight that police will take any reports of suspicious or criminal activity within esports seriously, and we encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

The accused were interviewed and released, but are subject to additional questioning. If found guilty, the men could face up to ten years in prison.

Nik Are you serious? 10 years for something that is not too much of a big deal but I am wrong. I think they should get perm banned from playing instead of jail time, isnt this too harsh for gamers. All they did was fix a few matches not like they seriously did some crimes behind this. This is outrageous in my opinion.

Illegal Gambling is very probably a felony, at least in some places. Given how big games like csgo are, it's safe to say they were trying to make a butt load of money by throwing the matches.
This would be like a pitcher losing a World Series game 7 because they put $10m to lose.

Not to mention, the likelihood of them being given the max 10 year sentence for something relatively new in terms of gaming, and this probably being a first run in with the law, I think a lower sentence will for sure be given. Can't wait to hear more about this.

Fines, some community service with a side of a delicious 6 months - 2 year prison time would've been a much fairer judgement.

10 years of prison time is too harsh for 19-22 year olds.
