Well, I certainly didn’t expect to read this today. In an absolutely surprising move, Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that it has bought Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet and Clank developer Insomniac Games after working with them since the PlayStation 1 games.
With this purchase, Insomniac Games is now Sony’s 14th first-party studio. While the news isn’t exactly a huge surprise given its history with Sony (the company first collaborated with the publisher on Spyro the Dragon), I don’t think anyone expected this news to be announced today.
Insomniac Games has generally made PlayStation exclusives it’s entire life, with F.U.S.E., Sunset Overdrive, and other VR games being notable exceptions. Its last game, Marvel’s Spider-Man, was available exclusively on PlayStation 4, selling over 13 million units since it’s launch.
Sony doesn’t purchase studios often, with Insomniac Games being their first purchase since Sucker Punch back in 2011.
In a press release, Shawn Layden, the chairman of Sony Worldwide Studios, talked about the purchase.
“Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled. We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.”
We have no idea what Insomniac Games’ next game will be, however, given this purchase, we know that it’ll be exclusive to PlayStation platforms.
