President Donald Trump Calls Out Violent Video Games After Shootings

4.1
President Donald Trump today delivered a statement in the wake of this past weekend's tragic mass shootings. 20 people were killed in El Paso, Texas at a Walmart on Saturday, and nine were killed Dayton, Ohio on Sunday, marking a weekend full of deadly gun violence for the nation. After stating that America must condemn racism, bigotry, and white supremacy, as well as pointing to the perils of the Internet, President Trump later went on to say "we must stop the glorification of violence in our society." The first item on that list? Video games.

(27:40) "This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace," President Trump said. "It is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence. We must stop or substantially reduce this, and it has to begin immediately."

You can check out President Trump's full remarks (or close to it -- the video begins in the middle of a sentence at around 22:15) in the official White House video below:

The speech from President Trump also suggested various policy changes and other programs, including but not limited to mental health reform, social media protocols, "red flag laws" to prevent access to firearms for certain individuals, and speedy death penalties in addition to cracking down on violent video games.

This marks the latest instance of mass shootings leading to politicians wholly or in part blaming violent video games. It's become something of a popular scapegoat whenever gun violence comes up despite there being little if any definitive evidence to link the two. It's worth noting again that President Trump first mentions racism, bigotry, and white supremacy, which certainly seems like a set of problems entirely separate from video games and any normalization of violence associated with them.

He just doesn't like the idea of people being able to do what they wanna do. They have to do what he wants to do.

Mario350 and my friend who thinks trump is the best president this this is a good move, trump is fking unfit and this goes to prove that shouldnt have been elected in power, because this made him look more retarded then ever now, he doesnt understand that its bad parenting and mental health and living in the middle of no where aka a rural area with no parks to play at as a kid and no where to really hang out at as have fun, thats what causes these psycopathic idiots not the games, can the us make is so its like canada with the gun control where you cant buy a military gun without a grade license to buy it, and take notes from canada about the gun control as well making you need to be legal adult age too

As I said before. They literally already have those things in place in America. Way more factors go into it then living in a rural area. None of these shooters actually lived in rural areas. These guys are just mentally unstable and shouldn't be able to own a fire arm. Unfortunately there isn't a test to determine if someone is a murdering lunatic because they can just lie on the test.

He can play video games but that's not the overall problem.

Yep. In my personal opinion i agree. Strict rules on purchasing games that are rated. Making it officially illegal to purchase for a minor.

Back when I was young rated M games were actually restricted and you needed parents to buy them for you. So that won't even make a difference regulating it if it I got them before digital games were even a thing

Both Obama and Trump had research done, both found that games do NOT make people violent. Plenty of 3rd party researchers have done the same, coming to the same answer.

This is all a scapegoat and will be forgotten in a week until the next shooting.
I'm pro-gun, but I'd be up for things like registered guns and proper licensing as well as getting rid of gun show loop holes. Maybe every 3 or 5 years you need to have evaluations done on your mental health.
Of course, stuff like that can be abused so that you can't own a gun when you're properly fit mentally.

Like I said, it'll be on the back burner in a weeks time with just the carcass of the dead being poked at for a quick story when news outlets have nothing else to bring up.

lolohnoeszsz I like how games are the scapegoat for when a mass shooting happens. Nope it's never movies, TV, music, people JUST VIDEO GAMES. I swear America is literally potato brained.

I like how its everything other than Gun control.

I think we need to get rid of all violent TV shows, movies, and music as well. Any arguable violent sports like football and wrestling need to be banned. If they wanna point the aim at violent video games why aren't we doing it with shows and movies that glorify tragedy and violence?
