PS4 has become the fastest console ever to reach the 100 million units shipping total beating out the PS2.

We all knew it was bound to happen sooner or later, and as of today, Sony has finally passed a coveted milestone with the PS4.

As revealed through Sony’s financial report for Q1 FY2019 today, it was shown that 3.2 million PS4 units were sold-in for this past quarter that ended on June 30, 2019. With this number in mind and combined with the previous PS4 shipping total, which was 96.8 million, we now know officially that Sony has made it to 100 million PS4 units shipped worldwide. As always, keep in mind that this is just the number of consoles that have been sold to retailers right now, and not those that have been sold-through to consumers.

This is a momentous achievement for Sony and the PS4 to have passed this total in under 6 years. Furthermore, the PS4 is now the fastest console in history to have ever shipped 100 million units, beating out the PS2 but just a couple of months.

While this is all positive news for Sony, the company itself is likely not as thrilled with the performance from the past quarter. Even though PS Plus subscriber totals remained high at 36.2 million users, sales as a whole were down on the quarter. Console sales compared to Q1 of FY2018 remained the same across the board on paper (this quarter was technically higher), but Sony says that software sales were lower. Additionally, even though PS4 remained consistent, those sales were lower than expected as well. As a result, Sony ended up decreasing its projections by 4% for the rest of the fiscal year.

This isn’t unusual by any means and one quarter for Sony that goes above and beyond expectations could get them right back where they were hoping to be this quarter. Perhaps Death Stranding will prove to be a big system seller when it releases later this year in November.
