3DS gets Flame Red Re-Deco

First new hue of Nintendo handheld joins Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue units in North American stores September 9; US 3DS sales to date roughly 830,000. Given the beating the 3DS took at retail relative to Nintendo's expectations, it's fitting the system was only available in black and blue. But with a price cut going into effect later this week and a holiday software lineup spearheaded by Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, the handheld is adopting a more appropriate hue as its prospects are heating up.

On September 9, Nintendo will launch the Flame Red 3DS in North American stores. Like the Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue versions of the hardware currently on shelves, the Flame Red unit will sell for $170.

However, waiting for the Flame Red 3DS means that customers will miss out on the system's Ambassador Program for early adopters. By way of compensation to those who purchased the handheld at its original $250 price earlier this year, Nintendo will be giving 20 free downloadable Game Boy Advance and NES games for existing 3DS owners. In order to qualify for the games when they are released later this year, 3DS owners will need to log onto the 3DS eShop or perform a system update before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow.

Nintendo also updated its latest US 3DS sales figure, saying the system had sold 830,000 units domestically since its March 27 launch. Last month, the company said worldwide 3DS sales had reached 4.32 million systems.
