Doom Ports Require Players to Sign Into Their Bethesda.Net Accounts

3.4
id Software and Bethesda, or rather Nintendo UK with a leak, surprised many players today by releasing Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch today during QuakeCon. Many players immediately downloaded the game, but were greeted with something surprising: connecting to a Bethesda.net account is necessary before anyone can play, online or offline.

Twiter users like Daan Koopman noticed this after immediately downloading the game on Nintendo Switch. To play these new titles for the first time, players must have an internet connection in order to sign into Bethesda.net. Afterwards, the games can be played offline, but they do require that first time-connection to Bethesda.net in order to be played.

While you technically have to be online to download this game from the eShop or another platform’s digital storefront, it’s still not ideal for those that like to or have to play games offline as well as those who just do not want to create a Bethesda.net account to play new versions of games that are several years old. Even though modern Bethesda titles like Wolfenstein Youngblood also require this, when you also take into consideration that online multiplayer is not a focus of the early retro Doom titles, this choice becomes more questionable and may not sit well with some people.

Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 are available now across PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with the first two games also being released on iOS and Android. You can check out the trailer revealing these classic, and now controversial, game ports below.
