Runescape parent company Fukong sells Jagex

3.6
Shanghai Fukong Interactive Entertainment, the owners of Runescape studio Jagex, is selling its stake in the company for $530 million (£424,063,600). Rumours which began circling back in January suggested that Fukong was considering selling the UK based developer, and those suspicions now appear to have been confirmed.

The Chinese company first acquired Jagex in 2016 for $300 million, and the developer celebrated its best year ever with the company, generating $1 billion in revenue. But even despite the game’s ongoing success, Fukong says that it will be selling Jagex less than three years after it was first bought.

Yicai Global (via Massively Overpowered) reports that Fukong is selling its units to acquire capital to repay its maturing debts, and that the company will focus on developing mobile games for the foreseeable future. There are further reports that Fukong has been involved in 57 litigation and arbitration cases related to financial and credit disputes.

When Fukong’s plans for selling in January were first reported, Jagex issued a statement to Eurogamer trying to put Runescape players at ease. The statement says, “Whatever the outcome of Fukong’s restructure, Jagex continues to execute on our short-term and long-term strategies for the RuneScape franchise,” and that, “Jagex has never been in better shape.”

Jagex’s statement seems to still stands several months on, as Runescape has recently released its brand new map, Anachronia, in its Land Out of Time update that released earlier this week.

Odd to sell an asset that hasn't flat lined or declined in revenue yet. Must be some big debts to pay off.

Wow, I can't believe this is happening again! I wonder if there will be any repercussions, I doubt it since rs3 and osrs remain solid to this day.
