Microsoft now allows Xbox players to pick any gamertag they want

4.1
Microsoft is expanding its Xbox gamertag system to allow players to pick any name they want. The software maker is using a similar system to what is used on Steam, Discord, or Battle.net, and it will mean Xbox Live gamertags will include a # number after them if they’ve already been taken.

The entire structure is changing today, and up to 12 characters can be used for the new gamertag system. If you prefer your existing gamertag then you don’t need to change it, and you won’t get a number added to the end of your name. If you do decide to switch the first change will be free, and $9.99 thereafter. You can change your Xbox gamertag right here.

Microsoft is also expanding the gamertag system to support more character scripts, which means you’ll be able to pick a name in more than 200 different languages. Microsoft has a full FAQ list for any questions around the changes, but they’re rolling out today on the new Xbox app and Xbox Game Bar for Windows 10 and will arrive on consoles and mobile apps later this year.

OG Great! Now the OG gamertags will be even more noticeable

Worth even less because they can't be sold anymore you'd have to sell your entire account and the person buying it would have to play on that account and not many people will be willing to do that when they can basically have the name anyway

What are you guys talking about!????

OG tags will be the exact same as before. In order to secure a tag from someone else you will have to get their information. For an OG tag maybe 10-100 bucks depending. But most of the good ones are permanent banned. So if you want something like "Halo" your tag won't be OG your tag would be "Halo1" or Halo7" depending on how many other people have it.

If I understand this correctly, the number will be visible to all players and yourself included. So no, OGs won't be obsolete and nothing else is really changing

You're misunderstanding. It's going to work the same as battle.net. For example my battle net ID is Jord#21891 however in game and everywhere else it is seen as 'Jord'. It's not until you have to add me that you see that my tag actually has numbers after it.

'OG' tags will now be worthless as everyone can now have the name 'sock' or 'toast' and it will appear like that in game. It's only individual ID's that change differentiate who is who..

It was only a matter of time before they did something like this tbh

Only issue is that it doesn't. I went to play MWR right now on my backup account, which I changed the name on, the gamertag would be "M92853" instead of just "M9" like I wanted it, I spent 50 bucks on name changes tonight trying out different things.

I tested it with alternative spellings too, such as accent marks, different alphabets that make an M shape such as Russian chracters, all of them show up with the four numbers at the end in game minus the hash, and honestly it's quite annoying that those like me who enjoy short names, can't have them because of how they set this up.

I wanted the name "x" lowercase, so that I might be less noticeable if I'm hiding, because some players overlook the screen tugging towards me if they're distracted or something, but because of how it displays those numbers in game, I can't do that either. If it only displayed them in the profile menu, I'd go for it immediately, but nope, displays all 4 numbers after it, in game, and I honestly hope they change it so only what you picked shows up in game, and the numbers after are only on your profile if someone bothers to go into it.

Guys gotta remember this is not even out fully yet... Its like the second day of beta lots will change in time.

XRV6 is correct. Do you guys think I didn't try it before I made the comment? Numbers appear in game for all players at least as of right now

You've clearly misunderstood you would now have to sell the entire account and you wouldn't be able to transfer the name onto your main account if you bought one because then it'd have the 4 numbers and once the games and Xbox is updated the numbers will only be visible on your profile meaning they'll have pull up your gamer card to see it og gamer tag values are definitely going to drop because of this because all the good og names are either on people's current profiles or their on burner accounts so if you buy an og you'll lose all process you have on your games or you could simply pay 10$ and have it aside from 4 numbers on your profile
