Microsoft now allows Xbox players to pick any gamertag they want

4.1
Microsoft is expanding its Xbox gamertag system to allow players to pick any name they want. The software maker is using a similar system to what is used on Steam, Discord, or Battle.net, and it will mean Xbox Live gamertags will include a # number after them if they’ve already been taken.

The entire structure is changing today, and up to 12 characters can be used for the new gamertag system. If you prefer your existing gamertag then you don’t need to change it, and you won’t get a number added to the end of your name. If you do decide to switch the first change will be free, and $9.99 thereafter. You can change your Xbox gamertag right here.

Microsoft is also expanding the gamertag system to support more character scripts, which means you’ll be able to pick a name in more than 200 different languages. Microsoft has a full FAQ list for any questions around the changes, but they’re rolling out today on the new Xbox app and Xbox Game Bar for Windows 10 and will arrive on consoles and mobile apps later this year.

Superior just because of this??

It's just that Xbox has more features, period. Until recently couldn't even change your PSN name. Not to mention the Xbox's architecture.

OG Great! Now the OG gamertags will be even more noticeable

Worth even less because they can't be sold anymore you'd have to sell your entire account and the person buying it would have to play on that account and not many people will be willing to do that when they can basically have the name anyway

Are you in the Xbox beta? From the picture, it says Xbox social beta so I'm assuming it's not out for everyone yet. Didn't work for me either

Arkani Does anyone know if the numbers show up in-game?

It's confusing me as well. Looking at the FAQs, I think it's gonna start showing in new games, mainly ones releasing in 2020 and a few this year. Here is the one I'm referring to

Will the # symbol and suffix always appear next to my name? When will it not show up?

If you are assigned a suffix, the # symbol and suffix will appear next to your name in all experiences except for friends in your friends list. Your suffix will show in games so everybody knows who is who.
