Microsoft issues apology over ‘insensitive’ Amy Winehouse tweet

4.8
Microsoft’s UK Xbox 360 PR team were forced to issue an apology on Monday following an ill timed twitter message.

The company’s @tweetxbox360 twitter handle tweeted “remember Amy Winehouse by downloading the ground-breaking ‘Back to Black’ over at zune,” earlier on Monday. The tweet generated widespread anger and disbelief that Microsoft would use the death of 27 year-old Winehouse to promote content at Zune. Mashable reports that a number of users labelled the tweet a “fail at social media”.

Microsoft issued an apology shortly afterwards. “Apologies to everyone if our earlier Amy Winehouse ‘download’ tweet seemed purely commercially motivated,” it said. “Far from the case, we assure you.”

Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27 on July 23 at her London home in Camden. Her death is “as yet unexplained” by police and initial autopsy reports failed to find a cause of death. Sales of Winehouse’s records have soared since the premature death of the singer.

Tiny-Wings Lmfao! Why Do I give a **** that she died? Is she supposed to be special to me? People die all the **** time! She had terrible music and it was an overdose! I would maybe feel bad if she got hit by a car or a heart attack or something, But an overdose? she brought it upon herself with that one, No respect for the stupid ****. people are way to **** sensitive these days, Way to go Microsoft :) why not try and make a quick buck of some stupid ****'s death?

I agree with parts of that - yes, she brought it upon herself, but there's no need to call her that, it's a bit harsh. It's wasn't a case of if she was going to die, it was when.

No respect from me either, but what you said was a bit harsh.

- Superdry.

If you are a walking asshole and dont respect the living. At least show some for the dead. She brought it upon herself yes. But when you die. You wouldn't want that for yourself.

Well if you kind of think about it, it is in some ways offensive. Just imagine your mother died or someone close to you (Or an inspiration to your life) and imagine going on Twitter and seeing that your loved one's death is being commercially advertised in a rather dull sense of humor. This is just my opinion. Not that I listened to her, but still you get the point.
