PS5 Will Feature Backward Compatibility with PS4

Sony has confirmed that their recently revealed next generation console will be backwards compatible with PS4.

Almost out of nowhere, a next-generation PlayStation console was confirmed by Sony today via Wired. It’s set to be a powerful console with an AMD CPU based on the Ryzen line, so it’s exciting to think about what will be possible on the PS5. Fortunately, PS4 owners who would like to play their games on this new console won’t be left in the dust as the PS5 is poised to be backwards compatible with the PS4.

This feature was confirmed in Wired’s article revealing the console. The PS4’s lack of backwards compatibility, excluding PlayStation Now, was a sore spot for many gamers, especially those who traded in a PS3 for Sony’s latest console. It also helped encourage the birth of the “next-gen” or now “current-gen” remaster of games from the previous generation.

While details on how exactly backwards compatibility will work are still scarce, Wired’s article explicitly states that “because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console.” Considering that over 90 million people own a PS4 and its plethora of great games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, this is a very smart decision on Sony’s part that will likely encourage more people to pick up their next gen console.

Mark Cerny confirmed to Wired that the technically still unnamed PS5 will not be releasing in 2019. That being said, you can be sure that DualShockers will let you know when any more details about Sony’s next-generation console emerge in the future.

That's cool and all but if you could play PS1 2 and 3 games than that would be out of this world. So many classics many people grew up playing and would love to play again. I'm actually happy to see some of these remastered games such as crash and spyro but not so much the cod ones.

I sure would hope they didn't make this mistake again with this gen.

Good, not having BC or not having it at launch is lame. It's been a big part of gaming since ps2 and Xbox 360, and even before that

I wonder how many future gen consoles in the future bc will continue to work on i.e say PS10 is out will PS3 games still be playable?

Not surprised they try to take most ideas from Microsoft.

Assuming it would. Otherwise they would have a lot of pissed off people.

Good to hear but what about PS 2 games as well.

well i hope it would lol that be a waste if it didnt

I would be more surprised if it had PS2/3 backwards compatibility but I doubt Sony will invest making that work. Although it will make some PS4 games with unlocked frame rates run much better.

Boring, not relevant, and most importantly, not Microsoft :)
