Xbox 360 Graphics Quality Raised by New Tech

4.6
While multi-sample anti-aliasing (MSAA) has been available on both Xbox 360 and PS3 since day one, RAM and bandwidth limitations on the Sony console often meant that early cross-platform games would only feature anti-aliasing on the 360 version.

Sony didn’t take this lying down though, and created a new effect – dubbed MLAA – that used five of the PlayStation 3 SPUs to produce far superior results to traditional MSAA techniques in minimising “jaggies” and creating a smoother overall image. Debuted with God of War III, MLAA has since come to be a regular feature of both first and third party PS3 games.

It was, seemingly, an effect the Xbox 360′s CPU couldn’t match – but now a team of two developers have got it working on not only the 360 but also PC by using the GPU to achieve the MLAA – and they believe their implementation is superior.

MLAA is considered highly demanding, taking 3-4ms to render on the PS3 while using five SPUS, but Jorge Jimenez and Jose I. Echevarria say their 360 version is faster: “On the Xbox 360 we run at 2.47ms, with still a lot of optimisations to try,” Jimenez said.

“We can’t speak for all the MLAA(-like) implementations out there, but we think our current version 1.6 (the one used for these comparisons) has raised the quality bar considerably,” Jimenez told gamesindustry.biz. “In our tests, it produces results on par (when not superior) to CPU MLAA.”

It’ll certainly be fascinating to see if 360 developers can put MLAA to the same striking effect as seen on the PS3, and, whatever platform you game on, the ability of programmers to continue to push higher performance out of the ageing consoles is impressive.

snappster I`t realy doas not metter to me. Ofcurse I will be happie to receive games with better graphic on my 360, but at the End I don`t realy care. These days oll games have outstanding graphical preformance for me I would rather see more exclusives on my xbox. One time I eaven became ps3 owner because of theire exclusives, but than I realized that I need Halo more than all ps3 exclusives put together. BTW I could not stand theire controller (two small for me), but my point is I want great exclusive games with okey graphic, not high tech graphics and no exclusive games, besides halo that is. So MS just give me more exclusives PLZ!

I JUST RELIZED MY GRAMMER SUCKS AT SOME POINT YOUL`D HAVE TO GUES WHAT I WROTE SRY FOR THAT

-Jamy Lol Anti-Aliasing, has that only just happend for the xbox 360. Microsoft step up your home and compete with the Pc's please you will be left for dust.

Well the Xbox had Anti-Aliasing before, just not as good as it will now. I'm sure within the next 2-3 years Microsoft will ship out the next greatest console, using Hopefully (DIRECTX 11! ) Like what my PC uses

We do need a new console soon the graphics are still outdated on the Xbox 360. Direct X 9 which the xbox 360 uses is old, there already on Direct X 11. There graphics card is equivalent to a 7800GTX that is also very old.

micca20 STOP trying to update old hardware you can only push it so far just release another console you stingy F***S

How on earth are they stingy? If they do put out a new console in the next couple of years I don't see it doing well considering people don't want to spend another $300 (@ the minimum) to purchase a new Xbox. $300(at least) for the new Xbox, $60 for games (if the price doesn't go up), $10-25 for DLC's. I don't think people want to be spending money more than they need to.

Talk about hitting the nail on the head.

also with the backwards compatibility issues that hit both the ps3 and 360 the big question is would 360 games work on the new xbox.
if they didnt i doubt it would do well as there are still many games that alot of people play on the 360.
come on, it's been six years and console tech has been outdated for 3 of those. they should release a new one insted of screwing us around with shotty tech. dont forget the whole RROD plague that threatened all xbox consoles for years, (and still now!) either they should make something quality designed for next, next gen so it can last 6 years without becoming outdated or they should make cheaper consoles and release one every few years.
