What if I told you that the free-to-play Apex Legends is available to purchase for $29.99 on Steam? Now, what if I told you that it isn’t actually Apex Legends, but instead Apex Construct. Well, it appears that a lot of players, in China at least, have been buying the wrong free-to-play game.
According to Fast Travel Games’ Communications Manager, the developers behind Apex Construct that launched last year as a VR title on Steam, the game has seen visits to the store page increase over 4000%. As it happens, the game has also sold more units in China in the last seven days of the Reddit post went up (February 14) than during all of 2018.
While Apex Legends and Apex Construct both share a similar looking logo, and while both share a similar title, and while they both look visually similar…in some respects, the games are entirely different. Apex Construct is a single-player VR title with a story. Apex Legends is a free-to-play Battle Royale game exclusively only to EA’s Origins launcher.
It isn’t just Apex Construct’s store page that is surging in figures though, as a wave of negative reviews from Chinese buyers has taken effect. According to Andreas Juliusson, the reviews are mentioning how they, as buyers, feel as if they have been scammed despite this being no more than a case of mistaken identity and lack of research.
Andreas does say that “Most likely these units will be refunded” and then jokes with some truth “but our books look pretty good at the moment;-)”. He does mention that the “Steam Community team is looking into this right now” and that there are “massive misunderstandings going on”.
For those in China who were hoping to be able to play Apex Legends, they might not have long to wait after a partnership between EA and Tencent was formed which, according to a report, could mean the game is going to be heading to China. Meanwhile, Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends has been doing well, amassing over 25 million players, and that was after surpassing 2.5 million users in under 48 hours from launch.
Apex Construct is available for PC and PS4 as a VR title.
Apex Legends, on the other hand, is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
