Xbox One Had Zero Positively Reviewed Exclusives in 2018

3.7
2018 was a great year for the Xbox brand. From numerous and notable studio acquisitions, to the expansion of Xbox Game Pass, 2018 had many highs for Phil Spencer and co. But what Xbox didn't have in 2018 was many good games. Sure, it had Forza Horizon 4, one of the best racing games in quite some time, but in the face of PlayStation 4's God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Detroit: Become Human, it wasn't even a contest.

That said, even if you remove the juxtaposition of the PlayStation 4's exclusives from the equation, there wasn't many reasons to celebrate in 2018 on the software front as an Xbox One gamer, unless of course you enjoy racing games.

Recently, Metacritic released its 2018 video game rewind that looked back on the best games of 2018. Unsurprisingly, Red Dead Redemption 2 was the highest-rated game of the year. But not far behind was PlayStation 4 exclusive, God of War, which was followed by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Forza Horizon 4.

In 2018, the PlayStation 4 had 13 "good exclusives," which means games exclusive to the platform that land at 75 or higher on Metacritic. The Nintendo Switch had 10. PC had 33. Xbox One, zero.

"Microsoft failed to offer a compelling case to pick up an Xbox One rather than another console in 2018," writes Metacritic. "The best 'console exclusive' titles released for XB1 last year could also be played on your PC, and there wasn't a single game exclusive to Xbox One alone that received positive reviews from critics."

While what Metacritic is saying is 100 percent accurate, it's also a bit unfair. A true Xbox One exclusive doesn't really exist anymore, with Microsoft's first-party releasing all games on both Xbox One and PC. But even if you stretch the word exclusive to fit into this parameter: it still doesn't look good for Xbox One, because beyond Forza Horizon 4, everything else Microsoft released -- such as State of Decay 2 and Sea of Thieves -- failed to critically perform.

Again, overall, Microsoft and the Xbox brand had a lot of wins in 2018. But releasing games wasn't one of them, and when you consider PlayStation had a massive 2018, and Nintendo not a bad year either, it doesn't look good for the Xbox One. However, hopefully in 2019, with the release of games like Gears 5, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and Crackdown 3, it can turn things around.

In other news, Steam and PC probably had quite a few exclusives rated positively as well. So has PS. Even so, MS had a very good year in terms of PR and revenue, even if they didn't outsell the Playstation. Whoever wrote/ copied this to here was just asking to spark the war again. By the logic of exclusivity, I say PC wins, since you know, 1,000's of games have released on PC and not on consoles (Arma comes to mind quickest). I say play where you feel comfortable, and with the company you feel that way with as well. Also, not really a newsworthy article if you ask me.

Cookie Welp maybe they should have took the COD exclusive when they had a chance, not surprised.

CoD isn't an Exclusive. Playstation simply had the DLCs for a brief period before Xbox did. In general, I wouldn't say that's is what forced Xbox to have such a bad generation.
Multiple things they did turned a lot of people off of it.
Remember when they announced the Xbox One would be a forced online console and would ALWAYS be listening to you(Whether on or off)? That made a lot of people second guess the X1, mostly for conspiracy reasons and others for plain reasons like most people still don't have the best internet.

3CH Well when youre the MAN of exckusives like Xbox was for almost 20 years with Halo, PGR, Gears etc. Your reign eventually must come to an end. Im not worried. 2019 is looking pretty promising for Xbox exclusives.

Exactly what games are looking promising? I can only think of two, and one of them really isn't that amazing..
Crackdown 3 and Gears 5. And those still aren't technically exclusive, since you can play them on PC.

You're speaking out of pocket here my guy. CoD was rumored to be offered to Xbox as a console exclusive back at the beginning of the franchise, which is what the poster is referring to. The "Always online" BS you're referring to was connected to their DRM which they back tracked on almost immediately and fired their lead guy at Xbox for. I don't even know why that's relevant here, just for you to throw negativity?

Xbox exclusives will ALWAYS be playable on PC if you want to be technical with Xbox PlayAnywhere, so throw that argument out the window. So....

And not EVERY exclusive will appease to every player. Xbox is proud of their indie titles and will have plenty of them next year as well.
Again, they ruled the exclusive scene for almost 2 decades. A down period was bound to come eventually.

No negativity coming from me, just mentioning things that had blowbacks for the Xbox One when it was announced.
I myself have an Xbox, and not a Playstation. I bought an Xbox and a TV LITERALLY for RDR2 only(I suppose I'll play more, when titles interest me..)
I've had my account on Xbox for years, early 360 days, and not a single one on PlayStation.

Besides, on your mention of 'BS'..At least I had sources. Rumors don't mean anything when you're talking fact. It's just as you said, it had blow back and it required them to take a step back but the damage was dealt. It threw people off, so I'm not talking BS. A lot of people did not like the idea(And usually, when you don't like something..You don't buy it, right?)

I suppose you could argue that "16 years ago, there was a marginal CHANCE that Xbox could have the IP to itself." But, they didn't take it.

Besides, our argument aside, there is no denying that PlayStation was the better contender of the Generation. Outselling the Xbox vastly.
They had best think of a way to better themselves next generation if they plan on coming out on top. Of course, Xbox will remain a good console for generations to come but that doesn't mean they'll be first.

Mind you about talking BS again, because there are plenty of Exclusives I CANNOT play on PC(not from a real source, at least.) Where's my Halo 3 PC port straight from Microsoft?

Maze Xbox is at the point where they didn't really need to worry about exclusives. Practically everyone plays the same 3 games right now: red dead, bo4, or fortnite. I can play those on Xbox. Exclusives, that get boring after a few months, are something I'm never really concerned about. Sure there is cool games but I'll always go back to the better games, cough halo 3 cough

Well... fan boy? The Halo series has been garbage since ODST. And are you really saying that people only play those three games? ... Sure the three you listed are the big ones being streamed constantly but that does not mean that is all those games are not being played. Not to knock RDR 2 (Great game), but not all of us out there are on the CoD or Fortnite train thank you very much. ".

Yeah, I own an Xbox One and I don't play bo4, fortnite, or rdr2. I really wish xbox one had more AAA single player experiences like PS4.

Or Battlefield V? Or Monster Hunter World? Or Shadow of the Tomb Raider? Or Dead Cells? Or Divinity 2? Or any other countless amazing games since 2018 started? Sure the three you listed are the big ones being streamed constantly but that does not mean that is all those games are not being played. And as for boring and or exclusive, I would not say that God of War or Spider-Man are boring and I am quite sure that those were PS4 exclusives. Not to mention the Yakuza remasters and Yakuza 6 as well. I own an X Box One X and play it for Forza and Sea of Thieves but how about we not be little fanboys and continue to make it an obnoxious battle of which console is better? Enjoy games and don't label Halo 3 as a "better game".
