Project CARS 3 Will Be More of a Shift Spiritual Successor

3.9
While there may not be a formal announcement of a Project CARS 3, you can bet that Slightly Mad Studios has the project in mind. Ian Bell, the founder and CEO of the studio, expressed the desire to create a third game as a “spiritual successor” to their previous Shift games.

The appropriately-titled Need for Speed: Shift was a departure from the usual Need for Speed formula of arcade racing and cops-and-robbers, with a focus on hardcore simulation racing. The second game mostly eschewed the previous branding, being called Shift 2: Unleashed. Slightly Mad Studios followed those games up with the community-focused Project CARS games.

Speaking through GTPlanet, Bell offered the following:

“I’ll let you know that pCARS3 will be more ‘focused’… More ‘fun’… We went to insane lengths with variation in pCARS2 and with that comes infinite balancing issues. We’ve learned a lesson here and although we have no intention of reducing content, we know what we need to fix, where we made design decisions that were, let’s call it, ‘sub-optimal’…

“pCARS3 will be more of a spiritual successor to Shift, but with all of the sim goodness everyone appreciates… The key focus though is on fun and not biting off more than we can properly chew and digest.”

Project CARS 2 certainly received some praise and accolades, as well as offering a wealth of content, but Bell seems to think that there is still much improvement to be had. This quote could indicate that Slightly Mad is aiming for a “back to basics” approach for the next numbered sequel.

Even if Project CARS isn’t coming quite soon, GTPlanet reminds us that the studio is working on a Project CARS Pro for professional drivers and a project involving the Fast & Furious film franchise. The Project CARS titles are available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
