Steam reaches new 18.5 million concurrent users peak

Valve has revealed some updated stats about Steam’s user activity and health.

At the Melbourne Games Week, two developers from Valve – Kristian Miller and Sean Jenkin – revealed in a talk that Steam’s record for peak concurrent users now stands at 18.5 million.

Of course, when the concurrent numbers are this high, you can imagine engagement to be astronomical. According to the pair, Steam has 47 million daily active users, or 90 million per month.

Those users make about 1.6 million purchases on the store each month. As part of the same talk, Valve also revealed that customers in Australia will soon be able to use their country’s AUD as an official currency on the store.

Valve plans for it to go live in “mid-November”. Steam developers had, for a while now, the ability to set separate prices per region. Countries whose currency isn’t listed on the store would have the total converted back to USD.

Because this is developer controlled, it won’t have to always adhere to the worldwide conversion rates. For instance, an Australian developer may choose to make their game cheaper in their local currency than it is in USD or EUR etc.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean the eradication of ’60 USD = 99 AUD’ if the publisher is happy with the current conversion rates.

Steam is an excellent platform, one of my favorites. I prefer console but steam is so easy to use, and everything is centralized except for the companies that do not allow there games on there. I remember using steam back in like 2007 and how far it's come since then.

That is insane, not to mention the money they must be making off 1.6 million purchases
