Capcom shuts down Vancouver-based studio responsible for Dead Rising

Capcom announced earlier today it had canceled multiple projects at the Vancouver-based studio responsible for the Dead Rising series. It has now confirmed the studio has been closed.

Speaking with GI.biz, a Capcom spokesperson confirmed news of the Vancouver studio’s closure.

“Capcom is currently reviewing the allocation of its development resources that support the production of world-class content,” reads the statement to GI.

“Capcom has been focused on increasing the efficiency and growth of its game development operations. To support this objective, new R&D facilities and annual hiring have been underway at the Osaka headquarters.

“In consideration of this process, as a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan.

“As part of this overall direction, the studio will suspend operations, effective today, so the current staff will be laid off and the office will be closed. We appreciate the hard work and contributions of all the studio team members in creating unforgettable gameplay experiences for the Dead Rising series and Puzzle Fighter,” the representative said.

The firm announced this morning it had canceled various projects at the studio, which resulted in a loss of ¥4.5 billion ($40 million).

In February Capcom announced it had canceled at least two projects at the studios: an unannounced action-adventure title, and the next Dead Rising title.

At the time of the announcement, 50 developers at the Vancouver studio were let go. Today’s closure has affected 158 employees, and a small number of staff will remain on-board until January to finalize things.

It's a shame too see people lose jobs. But dead rising 3 and 4 just weren't as good as the first two in the series, I wonder what happens next.

Dead rising was and probably still is one of the best co-op games with friends. You can spend hours upon hours laughing. I hope this isn't an end to the dead rising games :(

Maze Damn over 150 lost jobs. Sure sucks for those people, wonder what this means for the future of the company

Yeah it does suck for those people but a few bug updates now and then would of been nice, games were just getting way too glitchy and shit

GroguPosted:

XxKleShayxX Good. They did a horrible job with Deadrising 4. Game was a huge disappointment and so many glitches. Could of avoided being shut down if they simply put in effort.

Agreed they should of tested it them selves then make an effort to actually fix what's wrong with the game but nah they don't want to do that
