As part of Game Informer magazine’s coverage of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode, we recently learned that the battle royale mode will support 80 players per match, and will feature various vehicles, as well as the return of zombies.
One other detail not many are aware of has to do with the technical challenges of getting the Call of Duty engine to support that many players, and in as large of a map as Blackout has. Something had to give, and it looks like it’s going to be the frame-rate.
When asked whether Blackout will run at 60fps, Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar said that the mode “can run at 60fps”, as that’s always the target for Treyarch games, but reiterated that it’s hard to maintain constant 60fps.
By the same token, Blackout won’t be locked to 30fps or any other frame-rate below 60fps, according to Vonderhaar. This will obviously become clear once the game is in players’ hands, but it does sound like the pristine, locked 60fps Call of Duty has been known for won’t always be a reality in Blackout.
It’s worth pointing out that though Vonderhaar didn’t name specific platforms, he’s likely talking about the console versions. You can watch Vonderhaar answer the frame-rate question and many others in the video below.
The Blackout beta will be available beginning September 10 on PS4, before PC, and Xbox One join the fun on September 14.
