With the release of several big games this week and a rivals service running a free weekend promotion, one could be forgiven for thinking that Sony wanted a piece of the hot-juicy gaming action.. apparently not! In their latest blog entry Sony admits the following: "We turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th" unfortunately this downtime relates to an "external intrusion".

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

The language used in these two blog entries does seem to suggest that Sony are unaware just how successful their security measures are, while it is understandable that a company would want to investigate an attack on their systems it is quite worrying how little they have to say about it.

While our readers attempt to define "external intrusion" we'll be off to change our passwords... uh nevermind.
