Fallout 76 Dev On Player Freedom

3.8
Fallout 76 is Bethesda’s first attempt at making an online-only shared-world experience, and though they might be nervous about it, some of the ideas that they have for the game have been, to say the least, very interesting. Take the game’s factions, for instance. Rather than putting down separate factions on paper and asking players to choose between then, Fallout 76 will instead have a more fluid approach to the mechanic.

Pete Hines recently spoke to Gamereactor about Fallout 76, and he said that factions in the game will work a little differently, in that rather than laying down different categories, it will just rely on players role-play whatever kind of faction they want to be a part of.

“You don’t need us to create the factions, you create the factions,” Hines said. “If you wanna have the Minutemen, then be a Minutemen and recruit other people to be Minutemen who go around the world helping folks and finding settlements that need help and going and do that. If you wanna be a trader, if you wanna travel around the map or you want to build an outpost where people come and by and sell stuff, you should do that. You don’t need us to craft those systems. The game will just allow you to do that. You go be who you want in this world.”

That actually sounds quite interesting, and it also seems to be playing into what have always been the biggest strengths of games made by Bethesda Game Studios. Role playing is, of course, one of the biggest pulls of games like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, and being able to create factions by just playing the role of that faction sounds like a unique, fluid take on the system. That sounds so damn amazing. It's literally turning the game into a real role playing game. Can't wait to get my hands on this.
