Microsoft has paid $7 million to Minecraft content creators since June

Minecraft has come a long way since its initial release on Xbox 360 nearly six years ago. Not only has the game drastically changed with frequent updates, making it more closely resemble its PC counterpart, but Microsoft’s purchase of Mojang allowed the company to pay some of the game’s content creators through the Minecraft Marketplace.

Speaking with Fast Company, a Microsoft spokesperson said that $7 million has been paid out to 45 Minecraft content creators through the Marketplace since last June. Marketplace content has even been downloaded over 25 million times. Though shares between Microsoft and the creators are split, the company assures that the creators get a “majority” of the money after what’s left of the processing fees of around 30%.

With the Marketplace, players can sell community-made content that can range from avatar skins to entire Minecraft worlds and everything in-between. This content can be purchased with virtual coins that you can buy with actual money after setting up a payment plan on your Xbox Live account.

In an effort to bolster this initiative and increase the amount of creators, Minecraft boss Helen Chiang said that the company is even looking into scripting APIs that would allow developers to sell the kind of content only available through the game’s PC versions.
