PlayStation 4 System Update 5.50 Gets Surprise Release

4.3
If you were planning on playing online games on your PlayStation 4 today and you don’t keep your console in rest mode, then you may have to wait a little bit. In a random surprise, Sony Interactive Entertainment released System Software Version 5.50 for its latest console, early this morning.

Version 5.50 clocks in at a couple hundred megabytes and should automatically start downloading as soon as you start up your PlayStation 4. Of course, if you keep your console in rest mode than it should already be downloaded.

For those that don’t know, while 5.50 is not a major update, it does add a ton of new features like a family manager to monitor a user’s playtime, a new PlayStation Plus tab, the ability to make wallpapers, cover images, etc. from a USB storage device, and a new Supersampling mode for PS4 Pro users, which essentially improves image quality even when on a lower resolution TV.

One small feature that was not originally detailed in the two initial reveals, was a brand new PlayStation VR icon next to game’s that support it on both the main menu and your library, which means you won’t have to guess as to what game’s utilize it anymore.

I wonder when they're going to allow custom pictures or is this already allowed? Glad to see new updates rolling in though!

Looking forward to this update.

Mickers Only odd people don't let the console do updates while it's 'off'.

Wish my bloody PC would do that. But yes, it's a good feature.

They sort of dropped it randomly and that's weird.

I don't play PS4 so doesn't effect me.

Sucks they didn't announce it was coming out. I don't have a ps4 but this update seems pretty cool. Family manager shows play time and you can add a new background from a usb wish I could upload my own pics to my Xbox as my home screen

Hopefully this update won't take long!

Glad they added icons for the games with VR, didn't know why the didn't already do this.

Really nothing too big since its only in the MBs. Family manager sounds interesting though, will this set an account for minimal hours of playtime a day if a user is under family restrictions?
