New Patent by Sony Hints At Backwards Compatibility Feature

4.3
While Sony is steadfastly against any form of backwards compatibility on the PS4 (which doesn’t let users play games from the PS3 or PS1, and only allows users to rebuy older PS2 games from a limited catalog, even if they had bought them previously), it seems like that might change with the PS5. A new patent that Sony filed seems to reference backwards compatibility, suggesting that the feature may come in their next console.

This makes sense on some level- one of Sony’s reasons for moving to x86-64 architecture was, after all, to ensure continuity and easier transitions between generations, of which backwards compatibility would be a part. That said, this is only a patent filing, and it doesn’t even explicitly specify backward compatibility for games, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

While Sony were among the pioneers of backwards compatibility on consoles (the PS2 was fully compatible with the PS1, and the PS3 with both), they have since given up on the idea- the PS3 eventually gave up on compatibility with PS2, and the Vita was only partially compatible with the PSP. The PS4 wasn’t backward compatible at all. If the PS5 is backward compatible with PS4, it will be the first Sony console in over a decade to have backward compatibility- here’s hoping.

This is what PlayStation failed to do but still kept up with Xbox. Great console however, could've done it much quicker!

Craig If it was possible all this time. Why did it take so long for them to do it.

because they're probably afraid of Xbox or something. Sony seems to be always late to the party and just slow with stuff.

Because Sony doesn't actually care about their player base. It's all about money. Why add it to the Ps4 when they can release a brand new console that will people buy for BC?

Same goes for tons of features they can add but just don't seem to care about.

Famous This will help out Sony sales for sure. I kinda hope this doesn't happen.

It sure would but it would take time i think as Xbox's feature has been out for a long time and has a much bigger library and look how long it took them to accumulate that. It'll most likely be the same thing for Playstation.

This is the reason I barely play my PS4 you can't play any older PS3 PS2 or PS1 games. Yeah there is a subscription but not that enjoyable.

Going to go out on a limb here, totally though PS4 already had the BC feature for their consoles. A huge loss in their sales since they dont have this, hopefully they'll add this sometime soon.

This is great news. I hope they bring back popular oldies games.

this would be sweet for ps4 user's

Its probably going to be full PS2 support after jailbroken PS4's can play almost any PS2 game without issue. If next gen PS5 does not support all PS4 games and the Xbox Two doesn't support all Xbox One games I can honestly see a huge shift to PC. People only want to own one machine to play all their games.
