Report: This Year's 'Battlefield' Is Going Back to WWII

4.2
This morning VentureBeat is reporting that, according to its sources, EA is taking Battlefield back to World War II this year, following the tremendous success of Call of Duty: WWII. Of course, it's a bit misleading to say that EA is following Activision in this regard; games take a long time to develop, and EA likely made this decision a long time ago.

In fact, according to the report, EA and DICE decided long ago that the futuristic setting wasn't where they wanted to keep the franchise. "They knew they wanted to get away from the modern and near-future settings for a while," Jeff Grubb reports, "but it also didn’t want to burn the WWII setting right away. This led the studio to start with WWI knowing that it could always still go to WWII with the next game if Battlefield 1 didn’t work out. Of course, that wasn’t the case — Battlefield I finished 2016 as the No. 2 best-selling game in the United States..."

This isn't EA's first venture into the lore and events of World War II, but make no mistake, this will reportedly be an entirely new game, and tell an entirely new story. The sources from whom we're receiving this information understandably wished to remain anonymous, but at this point it doesn't really matter. We'll know within a couple of months' time whether or not these reports are accurate.

In case you missed it, a Battlefield reveal trailer is in the works, and will very likely show up during EA's pre-E3 conference in June. June 9 or June 10 would be prime candidates for this reveal, or any time thereabout. While we can't offer any evidence for that timing, a reveal trailer is in fact in the works, as confirmed by DICE media director Randy Evans:

So what do you guys think? Last year we were all talking about how tired we were of futuristic shooters, but now are we in danger of being over-saturated with WWII shooters? Is EA late to the punch, and is there any way a project like this can escape comparison to Call of Duty: WWII? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

1337rep There's always going to be a divide between peoples preferences between modern warfare and the great wars, personally I think the old war era is much more interesting to play and fun!

Battlefield 1943 was a great game.

Again? Call of Duty was trash for like the past few games. Battlefield 1 was amazing.

Neither game was "amazing" now BF4 oh yeah amazingly beautiful.

I don't get why people hate on Battlefield 1, the game is actually nicer to play that Battlefield 4 and requires more skill. WWII games are always the best in my opinion, but only when they are done right. CoD completely ruined the idea of a FPS based in WWII, WaW was better than their recent creation. But Battlefield is now doing this to show them how it's done.

I completely agree. Treyarch games actually did an amazing job with Cod WaW. One of my favorite call of duty games, besides CoD 4. To me, I am a die hard Battlefield fan. I am so excited that Battlefield is making a WW2 game (as my name hints) :) -- Besides those games I have mentioned, I really likes Battlefield 1, though not my favorite era in history it is still a great game.
The reason i think most people don't like BF1 is the weapons, they're very hard to master and there's nothing that is overpowered. Most the guns are bolt action or similar so I think it just requires more skill than previous games.

See me personally, I felt like it was because there wasn't enough variety in the guns. I also felt like all the guns were very similar within their respected categories.

BF1 was just all around better to play then BF4

Lo Everyone's saying They shouldn't have made a WWII game cuz cod just made one... How can you even compare the two? Battlefield WWII will wipe out any WWII game that has been made or is coming. Battlefield is overall better

That's also your opinion, like in my opinion they should go back to making their games like BF4. That game blows BF1 out of the water.

BF1 was much better when released as at the time Call of Duty was dropping trash like Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare.

Battlefield will easily ruin any modern, future or past tense shooter game, it's just their style, graphics, and environment is always done better over all, they are a titan. I think this is a great move, maybe this could mark the end for Call of Duty.
